2016 is a milestone year for The National Sea Life Centre Birmingham as it celebrates its 20th anniversary and this summer unveils some incredible new developments that promise to bring guests closer than ever before to the magical underwater world.

The attraction is home to the UK’s only 360° Ocean Tunnel, which was the world’s first when it opened 20 years ago. This iconic centrepiece has recently undergone an anniversary makeover and the tunnel is now completely transparent throughout and transports visitors to life beneath the ocean’s waves – without the need for a snorkel!

There’s also Clownfish Kingdom, a brand new addition for summer 2016, that features an array of interactive tanks so visitors can come nose-to-fin with some incredible underwater species including the popular Clownfish and Blue Tangs. Not to mention some weird and wonderful new residents including the Marine Comet and Tassled filefish.

If that wasn’t enough, The National Sea Life Centre Birmingham has also launched brand new Behind the Scenes Tours. This special package can make the perfect addition to any day out and for just £3.50 per person*, guests will be able to journey deep behind the scenes with one of the expert aquarists to discover how the attraction cares for the thousands of marine and fresh-water creatures that live there.

Tour visitors will be granted privileged access to the working areas usually closed to the public where they will learn about the extensive breeding, research and conservation programmes, and of course see how the fish food is prepared!

Earlier this year the attraction welcomed some new Gentoo Penguin arrivals from Calgary that joined its existing colony as part of its Breed, Rescue, Protect programme. Penguin Ice Adventure is an icy cool exhibit that gives a real insight into the lives and quirky habits of the world’s fastest underwater swimming penguins.

Amy Langham, General Manager at The National Sea Life Centre Birmingham comments:

“When we first opened our doors in 1996, we were the UK’s only inland Sea Life Centre and immediately became home to hundreds of freshwater and marine life.

“20 years on, we have over 2,000 creatures and a 4D Cinema, not to mention the fantastic developments our Breed, Rescue, Protect programme has made. We have critically endangered Axolotls that began breeding last year, as well as an army of Golden Mantella frogs, which are facing a high risk of extinction in the wild.

“Year on year, we’ve invested time and effort into offering new and exciting experiences as well as introduced some incredible creatures from across the world’s oceans so that our guests can just enjoy an incredible day out and make memories together with their family and friends. Here’s to the next 20 years!”

The National Sea Life Centre Birmingham transports visitors to an amazing underwater world, where they get to see incredible sea life from all over the planet, from the coast of Britain and the chilly Antarctic, to the tropical waters of the Caribbean.

The aquarium is home to over 2,000 creatures, such as sharks, as well as a rescued Giant Green Sea Turtle, jellyfish, piranha, octopus and rays.
