The haemoglobin level in babies drops quite dramatically from the time of birth until two to three months (when the lower limit of the normal range is 9.5 g/dl).

Iron deficiency is the commonest cause of anaemia in babies, but in order to diagnose iron deficiency many other aspects of the blood count need to be assessed (rather than haemoglobin alone).
