In cases where the abnormal gene is known and detectable, it is sometimes possible to perform pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). For PGD you would need to undergo an IVF treatment cycle, and if embryos were obtained. They would have one of their cells removed and the chromosomes tested for the abnormal gene. Only those embryos without the abnormal gene would be replaced. You can imagine how this would have a much lower success rate than straightforward IVF.
